~Mums...The Word on "Mummers"~

When I met my husband 18 years ago,I became involved with learning about his ancestral homeland_ Ireland. He served as   President of the Ft.Worth Irish Association.I was delegated to help write the Newsletter. My kind of fun!!_I researched various aspects of the Irish Culture and participated in many community functions i.e. Annual N.Tx.Irish Festival,Celtic Heritage Festival,etc._as a Tea vendor with my business "Let's Talk Tea". I acquired then and to this day..."The Celtic Spirit".

Among the many traditions of the Celts_"Mumming" is one that dates back to pre-Christain,pre-Celtic,even early Bronze Age(4 thousand years ago!). To be sure, a "Mummer" is a person who wears a mask or fantastic costume while merrymaking or taking part in pantomime during any festive season_especially Christmas and Spring.

"The Book of Secrets" certified double-platinum in USA.Has sold more than 4 million copies Worldwide! AWESOMENESS!

Recently, I added the above CD/DVD combination to my collection of all things "Loreena McKennitt". I consider her my "Kindred Spirit".Her music/video takes one on a Soul searching journey.

The manner in which her music infuses the poetry and traditions of centuries pass of many cultures in _
Keats,Shakespeare,Sufism,Paganism,Religion,Christianity,Islamic_stirs the mind, body and soul.It is like unlocking the Secrets to the Universe_a wee vision of the Spirits that inhabit the World.Polish the mirror of your Soul...keep an open mind and learn!

The Mummer's Dance seen here is a song on the CD/DVD:

"The mummers would arrive at the door at night or at the end of the day, they would knock and their Captain (as the leader of a troupe is called) would shout or sing out a request for permission to enter. As soon as such permission was granted the troupe entered the house and the performance commenced. They might not always be invited into a house as there would be times when it might be inappropriate to have a performance in a house, e.g. if children were asleep, or a sick person present, or if there had been a recent death in the family, or something else of such nature. The important point here is that what instigated the performance was not the payment of money - the buying of a ticket - but rather the audience, the people in whose house the performance would be given, saying "Yes, come in and give your performance". So the exchange of money was not the vital instigating moment for the performance - "The important moment is when the host gives permission to enter. That response is crucial because people generally had no idea who these mummers were, they only knew that they belonged to the local community". So folk drama is about consolidating the values of the community, about reproducing the local community and allowing it to continue. Therefore it has a political as well as social value.

This form of "Irish Folk Drama" includes not only Mummers _but The Wrenboys,The Strawboys and The Whiteboys Connection as you will learn from the above source.Folk drama is the oldest surviving form of theatrics.

Ancient pagan rituals for good luck and fertility from the gods included many festivals, dancing, animal disguises and feasting.
Mumming shows began as miming performances and eventually grew to become more. The term mummers derives from the Middle English word mum which means silent. Words were finally added, but the original stories were often partially lost through translation and retelling of the story. It is also believed that these plays were performed around the end of the year and during the harvesting season because it was intended to be a celebration of the death of the year and its coming again in Spring.

In modern day_Mummers' Plays_there is a central incident of a killing and the restoring of life. The principal characters are a Hero, his chief opponent, the Fool,a quack Doctor who provides a cure to the patient_restoration of Life!

But wait_there's the ever popular Annual Mummers Parade in Philadelphia.Pa. & other cities held each New Year's Day believed to be the oldest folk festival in the United States. Here's a couple of colorful participants!

And...The Mummers Museum in Philadelphia

The fact that "Mumming" traditions still exist today_says much about passing rituals onward_generation after generation, etc. With the Rites of Spring,Ostara,Spring Equinox upon us...I find it fitting to share a wee bit of Celtic tradition with you.I love the way Loreena McKennitt uses the "Book of Secrets" to explore this ritual....bring this Celtic Soul into your Life via her music.

~Alhambra~ exhibits Spain's most significant and well known Berber Islamic Architecture,16th century Christian buildings and Gardens. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moorish poets described it as "a pearl set in emeralds",in allusion to the colour of its buildings and the woods around them.

Follow me to...The Palace of Charles V. for our experience.....

Yet, my fellow travelers our journey does not end in Spain!Travel with me to another beautiful setting in Sarasota,Fla...another night filled with stars above,a gentle breeze, plush surroundings, along the Bay Shore Road...arriving "in the nick of time" at the gateway of the Ringling Museum Of Art to witness the voice of an angel...for PBS Great Performance....11 year old Jackie Evancho sings Nessum Dorma:

Nessum Dorma_an aria from the final act of Puccini's opera Turandot. It is one of the best-known Tenor arias in all opera. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. I read the book ...what an amazing story for young and old!I love this aria so much, I "TRY" to sing it often while taking a shower.....

"Nessum dorma!Nessum Dorma!Tu pure,o Principessa, nella tua fredda stanza, guardi le stelle che tremano d'amore,e di speranza!"_(None Shall Sleep!None Shall Sleep!Even you,O princess,in your cold bedroom, watch the stars that tremble with love and with hope)

Oh!!!, how familiar this landscape looks...yet another beautiful venue to engage the senses.."The Center Courtyard at the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art",Sarasota,Florida.

The Courtyard of the Museum of Art features casts of original antiquities and renaissance sculptures, including the towering David by Michelangelo. "Black Facials,Black Irish & Black & Brown Harps"..Start your engines this is_ Gonna be a Good Ride!

Worth Watching_the "Black Irish" movie? You Betcha! Although, the box office $$ in the USA showed little of nothing to be made in profits in 2007_this movie could be any family's story,Irish or Not!
The main character,a sixteen-year-old struggles for independence is put to the test as his South Boston Irish-Catholic family implodes around him.An older brother descends into a life of drugs and crime, his pregnant sister is being sent away to cover up the shame of unwed motherhood, his father spends his days in a fog of alcohol and self-pity,silently torturing himself over what might have been and an overbearing goody two-shoe Irish mother. The one thing that keeps the young lad's head above water is his love of baseball. A talented baseball pitcher,he overcomes self-doubt and family indifference to fight his way into the state championships. To get there however, he must make a life and death decision, one that will change the family forever. This is a GOOD Movie_watch it!

And,on another note regarding "Black Irish"...You may recall reading in my October 21,2011 Post about_"Complexion Solutions:Arsenic Wafers & Bird Poop"_
http://sagebookwhisperer.blogspot.com/2011/10/complexion-solutionsarsenic-wafers-bird.html
Well,I'm adding another "complexion solution"_the use of Irish peat an age old Irish tradition for facials.Take a look:

Looks yummy, right? This is how it works_Peat has excellent moisture- retaining qualities which improves skin elasticity. When peat is applied to the skin, it penetrates partially between the epidermis cells of the skin. An exchange reaction of ions is produced when the binding process with albumin in the skin occurs. The harmful positive ions in the skin tissues are exchanged for the rejuvenating negative ions in the moor peat. These particles are captured by the blood vessels in the system, carried throughout the body to help healing. The rejuvenating benefits can be attributed to the abundance of essential oils, fatty acids and lipids. These penetrate into the skin re-establishing the skin's natural pH balance. ***BEWARE OF SCARING YOUNG CHILDREN IN YOUR HOME WITH THIS BEAUTY REGIMEN***

Now,another subject of today's Blog was an interesting tidbit of knowledge I learned while watching the TV show_"The Amazing Race".One of the challenges while on the leg to Paraguay was to properly string a HARP!Who knew_as the Announcer said_"The Harp is the National Instrument of Paraguay".

My thoughts on all things Harp relate to IRELAND.But ,NO!! After digging a little deeper, the Harp is the national instrument of not only Ireland,Paraguay but Wales,Israel, Burma,Ukraine, Peru(to a lesser degree) and Greece's lyre(a second cousin to the Harp). Which is funny because in planning my upcoming "Greek Goddess Birthday Party" in May_I've contacted the Harpist that played at my "Garden Birthday Party" accompanied by my nephew on Cello a couple years back to provide the Music. My friends and I will dress in togas while lounging around the pool with Harp music playing, eating Grapes & maybe a Greek bronze-bodied,scantily-clad Greek Male God may show up ...can't wait!!!!

The Paraguayan Harp was redesigned using tropical woods and other features.Paraguayan Harpist taught future generations via oral lessons, singing the lyrics in the language of the guarani. New techniques were developed moving away from classical traditions.Nails, instead of fingertips, were used to pluck the strings.Frontline World did an excellent story on Paraguay_Sounds of Hope..at 9:35m listen to the children Harpist play their traditional music:

http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/paraguay604/video_index.html.

Compare that style to one of my favorites_Loreena McKennitt_"Lady of Shalott".

Black Facials,Black Irish,Harps of The World_now that's probably something you never thought about..chalk it up as something you learned TODAY! Hope you enjoyed the journey....I did!

So,I'll end this Blog with some most beautiful pictures of "Harp's Around the World".
